Emergency Medical Technician

Emergency Medical Technicians provide pre-hospital emergency medical care and transportation for the sick and injured.

What Do Emergency Medical Technicians Do?

• Assess the extent of injuries or illness to determine medical treatment
• Comfort and reassure patients
• Perform and interpret diagnostic procedures such as taking vital signs
• Transport patients to hospital or other medical facilities for further care
• Document and record the nature of injuries and treatment provided
• Use spinal immobilization devices and traction splints
• Provide wound management

• Fire and Emergency Service Departments

Post-Secondary Institute

• SIAST – Primary Care Paramedic
o Certificate Program
o Grade 12 with a minimum overall average of 60% in the following three subjects: English Language Arts A30, English Language Arts B30 and one of Biology 30 or Chemistry 30
o Standard First Aid within two years of the date of issue
o CPR - HeartSaver "C" AED or equivalent within one year of the date of issue
o Length: 28 weeks
